Who We Are
CRBC is an umbrella organization for a wide variety of cycling interests in the greater State College area. These interests include bicycling advocacy, road racing, mountain and cyclocross biking, providing riding opportunities to young children, and many others. The common thread is that we love to ride, whether it be on the way to work, on singletrack through the forest, or on rolling backcountry roads.
The Centre Region Bike Coalition was founded in the
spring of 2000 to help facilitate the vision of a more cycle-friendly
Centre County. We are a collection of cyclists working for cyclists,
with the goals of promoting bicycling as a means of recreation and
transporation in the area. We meet on a regular basis to discuss a
variety of issues related to cycling and we maintain contact with a host
a local organizations, municipalities, and elected officials. And, of
course, we ride. Our member organizations include:
Nittany Mountain Biking Association
Nittany Velo Club
Penn State Cycling Club
Trips for Kids, Central PA
Centre Rails to Trails Association
We are a member organization of the World Carfree Network
a clearinghouse of information from around the world on how to revitalise our towns and cities and create a sustainable future. In addition to serving the carfree movement, Worldcarfree.net offers resources for architects, planners, teachers/professors, students, decision-makers and engaged citizens.
The
by-laws of our organization are found here.
The long term goals of the CRBC currently include:
- Get all local municipalities to support the construction of
bike lanes or paved shoulders on ALL arterial roads, whenever they are
up-graded or constructed. Some great places to start are the Whitehall
Road, Fox Hollow Road past Toftrees, and Route 45 East of Boalsburg.
- Safe, signed, connected & maintained bike paths that
connect bikers and pedestrians to important destinations! The new
Dalevue Park to Scenery Drive bike path is a great improvement in the
system. State College and Penn State are KEY elements for this plan, and
State College seems to be actively planning for a connected network..
The sign at East Branch Road near Dalevue Summit is a good example of
what we need throughout the sytem (thanks College Township!). It will
soon be important for the municipalities to empower Parks & Rec to
plan, improve, and maintain our system of bike/pedestrian paths.
- Access all available funds for alternative transportation
such as Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21),
Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR), Department of
Environmental Protections (DEP), and Department of Transportation (DOT).
- Provide bike-friendly facilities at municipal, campus and
other community locations (e.g. new library, schools, municipal
building) by including secure & sheltered bike-racks and showers for
bike commuters. Provide the same emergency transportation services for
bikers as are now provided for car-poolers.
- Make biking a central component of PSU transportation
planning.
- Increase the miles of commuter biking in the Centre Region,
i.e. create a real critical mass that is there every day.
- Educate bikers, automobile drivers and the community about
bike safety issues and about civil ways to live together.
- We need to work now to prevent our lovely communities from
becoming completely dominated by automobiles.
