This is an exciting time for bicycling in the Centre Region. After years of planning, advocacy, and collaboration, several long-awaited bicycle infrastructure projects are moving from ideas on paper to improvements people can see and use. New connections are being built that will make it easier and safer for people to walk, bike, and travel throughout our area.

Easterly/Westerly Parkway

Construction is underway on the Easterly and Westerly Parkway Shared-Use Path, which will add 1.6 miles of new pathways for cyclists and pedestrians! When finished, it will provide a continuous, dedicated route from University Drive to Blue Course Drive..

Blue Course/Orchard Park

Progress is underway on the new shared-use path at Orchard Park connecting Bayberry to Whitehall Road! Once complete, it will not only provide a much safer, dedicated route for riders, but it will also connect cyclists to Musser Gap and Whitehall Regional Park.

Blue Course/West Campus

More changes along Blue Course, near the golf course on West Campus! No more parking spots, curbs added, and a seamless flow no matter what direction you are going. Completed.

Houserville Road/Spring Creek Park

Another important connection is taking shape along Houserville Road. Construction has begun on the Houserville Road Shared-Use Path, creating a safer route for people walking and bicycling from College Avenue and the Ivy Hill neighborhood to Spring Creek Park. Future Spring Creek Park renovations will include a path along the other side of the tennis courts.

Serious crashes involving people walking, rolling, and bicycling continue to rise, prompting new efforts to expand vulnerable road user (VRU) safety education across Pennsylvania. This session introduces a practical train-the-trainer model for delivering engaging pedestrian and bicycle safety lessons to 2nd/3rd and 9th/10th grade students.
Participants will learn instructional strategies that combine classroom discussion, video, and interactive activities to reinforce lifelong safety habits. The session will provide implementation guidance, lesson planning tools, and practical tips for launching bicycle and pedestrian safety education programs in rural, suburban, and urban communities.

This session is ideal for educators, planners, Safe Routes to School practitioners, engineers, transportation safety professionals, health and injury prevention staff, and others working to improve youth safety and mobility. The first hour will provide an overview of lesson content and instructional approaches for both age groups, followed by 30+ minutes for discussion and Q&A.
