Encourage Bicycle Friendly Businesses

The Appalachian Outdoor House will be submitting an application for BFB designation in October. They have accepted CentreBike’s offer of $100 gift certificate to be used for purchase of bike tools for use by their employees to meet one of the BFB criteria.

Centre Inspires Grant Proposal

CentreBike was chosen as one of 5 finalists for the $100k Centre Foundation grant. The proposal is for a series of Open Streets events next summer to be planned by CentreBike along with several community partners. Mt Nittany Medical Center has agreed to be a major partner and the YMCA has also expressed interest. Jamie Bestwick is willing to be on the Steering Committee. Anna has been contacted by various media for interviews since the announcement.

Fall Events

  • Bike to work event proposed for Friday, Sep 11th with an information table set up at the Allen Street gates.
  • 4-ft pass law promotion – discussed having yard signs designed with a 4’ rule design. Jamie Bestwick expressed interest in this effort.
  • The PSU/Borough event called LION Bash (Living In One Neighborhood) will be held on Thurs, Aug 27th from 6:00-8:30pm in the 200 block of Allen Street. The purpose is to bring together students and residents with music, food and engagement activities. CentreBike could have a table to share bike safety information.

A CentreBike response to the Warner Road PennDOT plan was discussed to endorse a bike/pedestrian path in addition to a wide road shoulder.

There being no further business to come before the meeting, it adjourned at 6:30 pm.

Come On Down to the Nittany Stage Race

“The Nittany Stage Race is the dream of every cyclist.  A two day, three race event that offers a challenging road course, incredible downtown racing, and lots of bang for the buck… all to help a great cause! “

On Aug 1-2, CentreBike is helping to support the Nittany Stage Race (www.racestatecollege.com). Not only do proceeds go towards a great local organization, The Bestwick Foundation, but the event will bring crowds of top cyclists to town, and help us continue to build momentum around our bike-friendly image.

On Sunday, CentreBike encourages all residents of State College to bike down to downtown to watch the races – which will be held on several closed-off roads of the Borough. In addition to spectating, from 1:30 to 6:00, during the Criterium races, a section of Nittany Ave (next to KCF Technologies) will be closed. CentreBike will host activities like free bike tune-ups and safety checks, as well as having food trucks (including Food for Thought and Ritas Italian Ice), a masseuse from A Step Beyond Massage Therapy, and unusual bike demonstrations. Visit with folks from The Bicycle Shop as well as 105.9 Quik Rock From 5:00-5:20pm, families who register at the tent in advance can have the chance to ride the Criterium bicycle course! Learn more about Family Fun at the Criterium.

Many CentreBike members are also volunteering to help on both days of the event – marshaling at intersections, set-up/take-down, pace car drivers, and more. (Watch out for us in our matching shirts!) If you are interested in volunteering, there are still slots available — contact Brian Dempsey at bad5@psu.edu

We hope to see you there!
