• Fall Bike to Work Day – Thurs, Sept. 8

Ready to try biking to work?

We are encouraging all Centre Region residents to commit to bicycling to work on Thursday, September 8th to celebrate our designation at a Bicycle Friendly Community and Penn State’s status as a Bicycle Friendly University.

    3

Together with PSU Sustainability and PSU Transportation Services, CentreBike will have a table from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Allen Street Gates (at the intersection of College Ave & Allen St. in downtown State College) where you can register bikes, ask questions, hear updates on bike route expansions and improvement, and learn about group ride events.

If you have never tried biking to work, we can match you with a mentor who can answer questions, identify a comfortable route, and/or bike with you. Commuting by bike offers several advantages in addition to exercise and financial savings; it can also save time for those with shorter driving distances or satellite parking spots.

    How to participate:

    • Commit to bike to work on Thursday, September 8 and/or stop by Allen Street Gates that day (8 a.m.-4 p.m.)
    • Encourage friends to commit by sharing an image above in emails or social media
    • Contact us if you would be interested in help from a bike comm2ute mentor

Share your commute photos this fall with #CentreFallBike or @sustainPSU on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. You can also directly share on the CentreBike or Sustainability at Penn State Facebook pages.

    • Joan Potter, Secretary/Treasurer
    • Jean Bemis

The meeting was called to order by Anna Nelson at 5:35 pm.

    Election of Executive Committee Members

The slate of two new Executive Committee members was nominated, seconded, and unanimously approved:

    • Courtney Hayden
    • James Read

    Bike Racks

Five bike racks will be purchased from Penn State Salvage for $10 each, and “Donated by CentreBike.org” signs will be riveted to the racks. The racks will be donated to West Side Stadium Grill, Toftrees, Gigi’s, Millbrook Marsh and Park Forest Elementary School to help them become more bike-friendly.

    Lion Bash

On Tuesday, Aug 30th from 6:00-8:30p, CentreBike will participate in LION Bash with an information table located near the new bike repair station across from the Borough Building. The “engagement station” will be Slow Bike Races. A motion was approved to purchase 100 custom-printed “CentreBike.org” bike lights for prizes, and extra lights will be used as giveaways for future events. Mark Davison offered to provide 2 bikes for the races, and Courtney Hayden will provide 2 helmets. Volunteers are needed to help.

    Fall PSU Info Table

CentreBike will have an information and bike registration table at the Allen Street Gates on Thursday, Sep 8th from 8:00-4:00. Brian Dempsey will coordinate volunteers.

    Fall Biking Classes

Paul Rito & Brian Dempsey will instruct cycling skills classes this fall. Classes will be promoted in the fall Centre Region Parks & Rec Active Guide. In addition, Anna Nelson & Trish Meek will offer an introduction to biking in the Centre Region course.

    Miscellaneous

Mark Davison raised concern about trail allocation and signage in state game lands (Scotia), specifically where biking is and is not allowed. It was noted that at one path entry point it states no biking or horses and at another entry it does not. The area is being monitored by the Game Commission and two people who weren’t aware it was not allowed were recently fined $200 for riding horses. Mark will look into this issue further. It was suggested that CentreBike add game land guidelines for biking to the website.

It was recommended that CentreBike’s website offer information on who to contact in each municipality about cycling issues, or possibly add a mechanism to the website to report cycling issues.

The Aug 1st meeting of the Borough Capital Improvement Project (CIP) was discussed. There were many public comments on the proposed action sports (skate/bike) facility in Orchard Park. Those opposed raised concerns about noise, lack of parking and loss of green space, although most mentioned they were in favor of a sports park, just not located in Orchard Park.

There being no further business to come before the meeting, it adjourned at 6:40 pm.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Joan Potter, Secretary

Names were accepted for nominees to fill two positions vacated by Sue Barsom and Kelly Doyle. A motion was made and seconded for the following slate of nominees to be voted on at the next meeting:

    • Courtney Hayden
    • James Read

    Bike Racks

As referenced last month, the lack of bike parking is an issue at various locations around town, particularly during Arts Fest. CentreBike has the opportunity to purchase a few of Penn State’s old racks as they are replaced with new ones. The plan is to apply tags “Donated by CentreBike.org” to the racks and donate them to businesses to help them become more bike-friendly. Initial suggestions include West Side Stadium Grill, Toftrees, Gigi’s, Centre Foundation and Millbrook Marsh. Several racks will be available soon, and it was moved and seconded to allocate $10-$25 to purchase each rack.

It was further discussed to identify bike-friendly businesses on the next update to the Visitor’s Bureau map.

    Lion Bash

The 2016 Lion Bash community event will be Tuesday, August 30th from 6:00-8:30p. CentreBike was invited to participate with an information table located near the new bike repair station across from the Borough Building. Ideas were discussed to host an “engagement station” with a giveaway, such as bike lights. Sarah Pollock offered to create a map with photos identifying good bike rides from campus that could be displayed at the event. Plans will be finalized at the August meeting.

    Bicycle Touring Class

Brian and Paul gave an update on the class they offered on bike touring skills. It was well received by the 11 people who attended, and the class fulfilled an education requirement for the Bike-Friendly Community application. There is interest in more cycling skills classes, such as Cycling 101, Learn to Ride, Commuting Skills, and Biking in the Centre Region. It was noted that two cycling classes will be offered in the fall Centre Region Parks & Rec Active Guide.

    Fall PSU Info Table

Discussed hosting a bike info and registration table at the Allen Street Gates. Possible dates are Friday, Aug 26th, Sep 2nd, or Sep 9th. Brian volunteered to coordinate.

There being no further business to come before the meeting, it adjourned at 6:30 pm.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Joan Potter, Secretary
